Squatting to be made a criminal offence

The Ministry of Justice is to make squatting in residential properties a criminal offence following a campaign by Mike Freer and two other Conservative MPs.

Mike Freer MP last night brought the local shortage of school places in front of the House of Commons during a special debate on the issue.  As a consequence the Minister for Schools, Nick Gibb MP, has agreed to meet with Mike, Barnet Council’s Chief Executive and the Leader of the Council to discuss what can be done to boost the numbers of primary and secondary places in Finchley.

Frozen Council Tax saves Barnet families £72 a year

The Coalition Government has today revealed that Council Tax across the country has been frozen, including in Barnet, the first time this has been achieved since the tax was introduced in 1993.

Ministers to examine security funding for independent Jewish schools

Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for Schools, has confirmed that the Department of Education is examining funding of security for non-voluntary-aided Jewish schools.  The move follows £2m of funding being made available last December to the Community Security Trust (CST) to provide extra security guards at 39 voluntary-aided faith schools across England.

Breast screening take-up rate still poor in Barnet

Mike Freer MP has renewed his call for better breast screening services in Finchley after newly published World Health Organisation data showed that Britain has the highest mortality rate for breast cancer in the European Union.
