Mike Freer MP recently visited Embankment station to inspect the progress being made on the Northern Line interchange upgrade. The interchange between the Northern Line and other lines has been closed for refurbishment since January 2014.
During a tour of the station, TFL explained that had the station remained open during refurbishment, this would have costed significantly more, as well as taken twice as long to complete. TFL added that the station will be brighter, safer and more energy efficient as a result of the works. The bulk of the work is in replacing the escalators which were installed more than 80 years ago.
Commenting after the visit, Mike Freer said, “The Northern Line is vitally important to all of us that travel between Barnet and Central London and Embankment is of course one of the major stations on this route. Therefore, I was keen to seek assurances from TFL that everything is coming along as quickly and as cheaply as possible. I will continue to press TFL to ensure commuters are getting the best deal possible from the upgrade”.
The works are expected to be completed in October 2014 with £7 million allocated for replacing the interchange’s 4 escalators. Circle and District lines continue to serve the station and passengers have been advised to use nearby Charing Cross Station for Northern and Bakerloo services.
