Yesterday, Mike had the opportunity to plant a fir sapling in Basing Hill Park, Childs Hill, as part of HM Queen Elizabeth’s Green Canopy initiative.
The Green Canopy initiative has facilitated the planting of trees in communities across the country in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. This was originally done to commemorate the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last year, but the scheme has been extended to Spring 2023 to give people the opportunity to plant trees in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.
The Government has provided £499,000 of funding for a special programme of planting to be delivered by QGC Partners including Trees for Cities, The Tree Council, The Conservation Volunteers and Earthwatch. Working in cooperation with local authorities and communities, the funding will enable trees to be planted in over 60 locations across England, expanding access to nature and green spaces.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is creating a living legacy, with over a million trees planted in Her Majesty’s name across the nation during the first planting season, October 2021 to March 2022. The extension of the QGC initiative will build on this legacy and serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty’s extraordinary service to her country and her people.
