Many residents have recently contacted me requesting information about the latest position regarding the proposed development by TfL of the Finchley Central site. I have since raised these concerns with TfL and Barnet Council and have received the following update:
TfL has informed me that they have not yet finalised any revision of their plans, further to the successful objections to the original proposals to build 28 storey blocks parallel to the underground station. As many of you will know, I strongly opposed the plans which would have been entirely incongruous with the surrounding suburban area, and not least represent the worst kind of overdevelopment leading to irreparable damage to the Finchley Central area. TfL has said that they are likely to have an update on the direction they intend to go come September and I will be meeting with them at the earliest opportunity to discuss these proposals when they are forthcoming. I must stress that I will not support any plans that do not take into account concerns raised about the excessive size and scale of the development.
Many constituents have referred to plans currently being consulted on by Barnet Council as part of the cyclical review of its Local Plan, focusing on identifying proposed “interventions and enhancements” of the town centre. This can be accessed here: https://finchleycentraltowncentre.co.uk/news/finchley-square-public-consultation/. These proposals do not include the TfL site. The closing date for the consultation is 18th September. Of course, many residents may still wish to familiarise themselves with the plans and comment on them during the consultation period. I am disappointed that the Council has chosen to launch a consultation in the middle of August when many residents will likely be away from home, nevertheless, I trust you will welcome the opportunity to comment up until 18th September. I have uploaded a copy of the most recent newsletter which provides more information on how residents can participate in the consultation process.
My constituents can be assured that I will be following this issue closely over the coming weeks and months ahead.
