Yesterday, the Government announced that we have hit our target to recruit 20,000 more police officers, delivering on our 2019 manifesto commitment to recruit more police than ever before and make Britain's streets safer.
Newly released figures show that almost 21,000 police officers have been recruited in England and Wales through the Police Officer Uplift, building on our success in halving crime since 2010. Pertinent to my constituents in Finchley & Golders Green, this includes 3,468 new police officers in the Metropolitan Police.
Since the recruitment drive was launched in 2019, the 43 police forces across England and Wales have seen an additional 20,951 police officers recruited, putting a record of more than 149,500 police in our communities.
Getting extra police officers recruited across the country builds both on our Beating Crime Plan, which sets out the Government’s strategy for reducing crime in line with its ambition to level up the country, and the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act, which contains a plethora of measures with the central aim of cutting crime and building safe communities.
This recruitment success reflects the Government’s determination to ensure people feel safe in their communities, demonstrating that we are the only party serious and dedicated to a strong approach to law & order.
